Lose It! is a calorie-tracking app launched in 2008 by FitNow, Inc. It offers manual entry, barcode scanning, recipe import, and the Snap-It photo-AI feature. iOS, Android, and a web app — making it one of the few products in the category with full cross-platform parity.

The product has historically targeted the mainstream weight-loss audience rather than athletes or clinical use cases. Its UX reflects that — it is among the easiest in the category for a first-time tracker.

How We Tested Lose It!

I led the Lose It! evaluation in January–February 2026 with the standard six-criterion rubric and review oversight from Maggie Halloran. The evaluation covered accuracy, database, photo AI, macro and micro tracking, UX, and price.

Accuracy: How Lose It! Performs Against Weighed Meals

Lose It! posted ±12.4% MAPE in the DAI six-app validation study (DAI-VAL-2026-01) on photo logging. That places it mid-pack — better than MyFitnessPal (±18%) and Foodvisor (±16.2%), but well behind PlateLens (±1.1%), Cronometer (±5.2%), and MacroFactor (±6.8%). For manual and barcode logging, accuracy is bounded by the database entry, which mixes verified and user-submitted content.

On a 2,000 kcal day, ±12.4% MAPE corresponds to roughly ±248 kcal of photo-logging noise. That is meaningful — large enough that I would not recommend the photo flow as the primary logging path on this product.

Database: Verification Methodology

The database mixes verified and user-submitted content, similar to MyFitnessPal but smaller in scale. In our 200-item branded audit, roughly 28% of items had macro discrepancies of 5% or greater versus the manufacturer label. That is better than MyFitnessPal but well behind Cronometer or PlateLens. Per-item provenance is not displayed in the search UI.

AI Features

The Snap-It photo feature has been in the product since 2017 and has received incremental improvements but no major architectural rebuild. The 2026 error rate (±12.4% MAPE) reflects this maturity gap.

Macro and Micronutrient Tracking

Macro tracking is functional — it covers protein, carbs, fat, and fiber, with daily and weekly views. There are no per-meal macro goals on the free tier and limited recipe-level macro analysis on Premium.
